Kurseong gave me the Darjeeling vibe without the rush

When I planned my trip to the hills, Darjeeling was the obvious choice. After all, it is known as the Queen of the Hills. I had already imagined watching the sunrise over Kanchenjunga, strolling along the Mall Road, riding through the iconic Batasia Loop, and enjoying breakfast at the Keventers. In my itinerary, Kurseong was a brief stopover before reaching the “main destination.”

However, somewhere between the winding mountain roads, mist-covered hills, and emerald-looking tea gardens, Kurseong quietly changed the rhythm of my itinerary. This little hill town turned out to be one of the most underrated destinations. It had everything like Darjeeling, including its colonial charm,  mountain views, tea gardens, pine forests, and fresh mountain air, but with fewer crowds or the pressure to rush from one attraction to another. Kurseong was not trying to compete with Darjeeling. It had its own personality, and this town encouraged me to slow down and simply soak in the natural beauty around me.

The Kurseong town that let me slow down

From the moment I stepped out of the shared jeep, I felt I had travelled back in time to the colonial era. The fresh mountain air, scent of pine and freshly brewed tea, the narrow roads passing through the charming stone cottages, and moss-covered railings beside the road hold stories from another era. There was no rush, no blaring horns, and everyone was walking at a relaxed pace.

Every quiet lane invited me to explore a little further, and every turn rewarded me with another beautiful glimpse of the hills. As I wandered through the streets, people smiled not out of courtesy, but with genuine warmth. Shopkeepers greeted me with friendly conversations instead of sales pitches. For those few hours, it genuinely felt as though the outside world had paused. There was no pressure to rush, and there was a comforting feeling that I had arrived exactly where I was meant to be.

The tea gardens of Kurseong felt like they belonged to me alone

I walked into the Makaibari tea estate and, taking the zigzag lane in between the tea estate, I lost an entire afternoon there. Visiting the tea factory for the first time is yet another memorable experience that Kurseong surprised me with. The entire tea garden felt like mine.

After the factory tour, I wandered back into the gardens without any destination in mind. I simply walked, paused, sat down on a quiet patch overlooking the rolling hills, and let the silence embrace me.

The only sounds that filled the air were birds singing in the distance. The soft breeze of leaves dancing as the air was blowing. There was something incredibly calming about watching tea workers enjoying their work and moving gracefully through the gardens, with baskets on their backs. They are not only working, but they are carrying a tradition that has shaped Kurseong’s identity for over a century.

Eagle’s Crag of Kurseong gave me the view without the wait

I climbed up to Eagle’s Crag expecting fog to swallow the valley whole. However, the clouds parted just at the right time to reveal the beauty of hills folding into each other below. No long queues were waiting for the best viewpoint, no chatter interrupting the stillness, and no one asking for a quick photograph.

I had the entire place almost to myself. I spread my arms to feel the chilly breeze brushing through my face and embrace silence with a pinch of nature around me. For a few precious minutes, nothing else mattered to me. There were no plans for the next stop, only the whisper of the wind, the scent of pine, and the quiet mountains standing tall.

Final thoughts

Darjeeling will always have its charm, and I don’t regret a single evening spent there. However, if you’re planning that trip up into the hills, don’t let Kurseong be a stopover. Instead, always plan and book hotels in Kurseong so as not to miss the charm of the town. That one spontaneous detour completely transformed the way I looked at Kurseong. Sometimes, the places we plan the least leave the deepest impressions.
